About the Victoria Scholars

The Victoria Scholars Men’s Choral Ensemble was founded in 1993 by graduates of Toronto’s St. Michael’s Choir School and takes its name from Tomás Luis de Victoria, an outstanding Spanish composer of the Renaissance period whose music is renowned for its deep spirituality and emotional expressiveness. The essence of the Scholars’ music is an emphasis on the clarity and balance of sound so characteristic of Renaissance music.

Music Director
Jerzy Cichocki

Jerzy Cichocki is music director of the Victoria Scholars. From 1986 to 2016, he served St. Michael’s Choir School in various capacities, including as artistic director, principal choir conductor, and organist. His academic and professional credentials include degrees from Yale University (MMus, MMA, DMA) where he specialized in choral conducting, and from the University of Toronto (BMus, BEd), where he studied music and education. He holds associateship diplomas in piano and organ performance, and is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

Dr. Cichocki has performed as conductor with notable Canadian choirs and orchestras, and his discography includes recordings of sacred and other choral music with the Victoria Scholars and
St. Michael’s Choir School. His publication With Angels and Archangels (2016, published by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto), is an extensive collection of hymns and sacred songs that represent the tradition of Christian hymnody from the third century to the present.
